The Historical residence Palazzo Malfatti is a set of apartments situated in the heart of Massa Marittima in a thirteenth-century Palazzo of great historical importance.

The owners are mentioned in the Divine Comedy in Canto V of Purgatorio (Dante Alighieri).

130 “Deh, quando tu sarai tornato al mondo,

Dante meets Pia de Tolomei in Purgatory to which this verse refers, and that's where the story of Palazzo Malfatti begins.

The building already existed in the thirteenth century and was given the name of Palazzo Pannocchieschi.

The Pannocchieschi family was divided into three branches: the Pannocchieschi di Pietra, those of Perolla and those of Travale, from whom the Siennese Pannocchieschi lord of Elci was descended.

The lord Pannocchieschi (had known his statement) at the beginning of the twelfth century in the territory of Volterra. After of the thirteenth century were rooted in the territories of Maremma in relation to the exploitation of mineral resources: they had a noble Palazzo in Massa Marittima, still preserved, and the surrounding country founded Rocchette Pannocchieschi settlement related to the exploitation of copper deposits and silver.

Pannocchieschi emanated from the house of several bishops of the diocese of Volterra.

One of the Pannocchieschi Family was the husband of Pia de Tolomei. According to tradition (and was mentioned in CantoV of Dante's Purgatory) he kills his wife so that he could marry Margherita Aldobrandeschi. The current Palazzo Malfatti was built for her.

Many of the documents belonging to the family are preserved today in the State Archives of Sienna, in the "Pannocchieschi of Elci family" collection.

The present appearance of the building is the result of many changes that occurred over time. In the XVI and XVII century, several additions were made by the Malfatti family, who had become the owner. Another significant restoration was carried out at the beginning of the XX century with the intention of recovering the original medieval style. At this intervention must be the set of visible light windows in the first and the second floor. The lodges on the lower floor were also extensively renovated in the XX century. The first document to mention the Castello di Potentino is dated 1042. It then belonged to a certain Count Pietrone or Pepone. However, the original foundations are probably Etruscan. Over the centuries the property passed through the hands of many well-known Tuscan families of noble descent - the Tolomei, the Bonsignori, and the the Salimbeni, whom in the company of Contessa Bianchina, received Saint Catherine of Siena as a guest at the castle. At the end of the 16th Century it became a centre for the charitable works of the hospital order of Santa Maria della Scala.

After this period of religious activity, the Medici Duke Ferdinando I conceded the estate to Marchese Giovan Battista Bourbon del Monte, famous commander-in-chief of the infantry of the Venetian Republic. His descendants finally sold the castle to a gentleman from Switzerland, Antonio Hemmeler, in 1906. Recently it was purchased and restored by the Greene family, who have given new life to the ancient traditions of the building.

The Greenes have owned properties in the Tuscan Maremma for over 30 years. Starting with a farmhouse near the coast, they gradually moved inland. Castello di Potentino is their second major project in the Grosseto area.

In 1989 the family purchased their first ruined castle – the Castello di Montepo, Scansano. Restoration was completed, vineyards planted and a winery established. After 10 years it was sold to a well-known wine producer from the Biondi Santi family. The next castle, Potentino, was discovered in an old guide book. Abandoned, dilapidated, overgrown, the potential was still apparent. It was for sale but had to be bought from 22 different people. Negotiations took a year and agreement finally reached with all the owners. In 2000, work commenced.

The 19th century building belonged to Conti Guerrini who, in the person of Hilda aunt, donated it entirely to my mother about 15 years ago.
It rises on an old garden and small graveyard of the friars and in our courtyard Guests can still admire a friar tombstone that was found in the subway during renovation, a marvelous example of carrara white marble craftsmanship.

In 2003 we started renovations and in 2005 we finally opened as Residence Hilda. The style tends to suggest cleanliness, comfort and light and to offer an environment to fill with your imagination.
A place to relax during holidays or after work, with all the modern comforts, with much more space than a traditional hotel, with the privacy as a private home, but with the services of an excellent hotel (and beyond, thanks to it being family run).
Floral gifts come from our garden on the hills, where we have a 62 English roses bushes collection, as well as the fruits, when available.
It was a tradition for English travellers, in the early 20th century, to stay in good guest-houses offering comity and warm hospitality. Often, they returned to the same guest-house for generations during their “Grand Tour”.

The minimalist style of the furniture, with contemporary design, and the ambition to recreate the courtesy atmosphere of 1 century ago, may seem in contrast, but they actually tend to the same goal: make our Guests' stay as pleasant as possible.

Villa il Patriarca is an ancient noble residence from the 19th century, which today, after careful renovation, represents an exclusive home in Tuscany.
Villa il Patriarca is an ancient noble residence from the 19th century which today, after a careful renovation, represents an exclusive accomodation in Tuscany. Surrounded by a large park and beautiful hilly views, it is located halfway between Chiusi, the ancient capital of the mysterious Etruscan population, and the renowned spa town of Chianciano Terme. In the immediate surroundings we can admire, among others, Montepulciano, famous all over the world for the Vino Nobile, Pienza, the ideal city of the Italian Renaissance and well-know for its cheeses Pecorino DOP, Montalcino, Brunello's homeland, and the nearby Val d'Orcia, Unesco heritage site since 2004 and acclaimed icon of the Tuscan landscape.

Of ancient historical origins, Villa il Patriarca rests its foundations on the original Etruscan villa dated between the fifth and fourth centuries BC. During the Roman Empire and in later periods, the Villa has always welcomed guests and important personalities, given the strategic importance that this land near the passage of the Cassia road covered and thanks to the most recent construction of the State Railway in nearby Chiusi.

In 1815 a wealthy family from Chiusi had the main body of the current residence built in perfect Florentine liberty style, with the high tower on the right side of the facade and with a central entrance; fragments of the original white travertine decoration are set around the entrance door.

The presence of the Royal Family in this area further increased the fortune of the Villa, which in the early 1900s was purchased by an illustrious notary from Rome who gave the name to the entire building, Patriarca.

It was, however, in the late 1950s that, thanks to the construction of a new wing, by the famous architect Pierluigi Nervi, the undisputed protagonist of 20th century architecture, expanding and integrating the original 19th century structure, it opened to receptivity hotel industry. Of note is the large Salone Nervi, devoid of central columns is one of the largest restaurant rooms in Italy, with which Pierluigi Nervi has left us a remarkable testimony of his art, for which functionality and stillness are the necessary corollary to the aesthetics of form (the most illustrious example is certainly the Papal Audience Hall in the Vatican) the villa was transformed into a 3-star hotel, when the spa town of Chianciano Terme was the usual destination of the Italian intellectual class.

Villa il Patriarca hosted, among its most illustrious guests, the great director Federico Fellini and his wife Giulietta Masina, who today the hotel pays homage by dedicating two splendid Suites. It is here that Fellini imagined, conceived and even set what is considered his absolute masterpiece and one of the most important films in the history of cinema: "8 and 1/2".

In 1999 the property passed to the Panarese-Grappi family, agricultural entrepreneurs of the Val d'Orcia who carried out a radical restructuring both as regards the Hotel, now 4 stars, and as regards the restaurants: in 2003 the gourmet restaurant " I Salotti " was awarded 1 Star for the first time in the Michelin Guide, after that maintained for 19 years, and in 2005 the" Taverna del Patriarca "was opened in the old cellars of the residence.

Villa il Patriarca offers an elegant hotel and two restaurants, different in their environment and type.
Welcomed by the pleasant welcome of the Reception, a multilingual staff able to satisfy the most intimate needs of the customer, our guests can choose from 22 rooms equipped with every comfort and different from each other in categories and furnishings. Some, located in the ancient wing of the Villa, retain all the elements of the typical Tuscan style; others, characterized by a softer style, are more elegant and refined in furnishings.
For those who want the magical atmosphere of stuccos and damasks, you can find it in the two exclusive Suites Fellini and Masina.

The recommended Michelin Guide restaurant, "I Salotti", chef Katia Maccari, is elegantly furnished and adorned with lambris and boiserie; the polychromatic charm of silver and crystal objects is preserved on the white and golden consoles of the dining room. The cuisine is inspired by the Tuscan tradition by offering singularly creative dishes and high-class service.
To accompany "I Salotti", with the aim of enhancing the renowned regional specialties, there is the "Taverna del Patriarca", obtained in the ancient cellars of the Villa. A very courteous service is combined with a simple and tasty cuisine with a very articulated menu. The peculiarity of the Taverna is an open brazier, where it is possible to cook meat and fish specialties.
The selection of wines from our restaurants is vast and boasts labels of high quality.
